From First Notes to Full Stages: Celebrating the 2025 Roxy Music Student Concerts

A Record-Breaking Week of Music and Growth

I’m writing this from Brunswick, Georgia, still reflecting on an unforgettable week back home in La Porte. From April 29 through May 1, we hosted our 2025 Roxy Music Spring Student Concerts, and they were nothing short of inspiring.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of La Porte Assembly of God, who opened their facility and tech to us, we were able to create three unforgettable nights of music. This was our biggest year yet, with nearly 80 students taking the stage—and almost half of them performing live with our house band.

More Than Recitals—Real Performances

What makes these concerts different? They're not just recitals. They're full-on performances. Our students brought their A-game across every genre—classical piano, bluegrass, classic rock, heavy metal, and everything in between.

We heard songs by The Beatles, Lauren Daigle, Radiohead, Snarky Puppy, and so many more. Every performance felt like a celebration of individuality and progress. One of the best compliments we keep hearing is:

“I’d pay to see something like this.”

So would we.

Student Bands Take the Spotlight

This year, each night featured a performance by one of our student bands—a highlight of our growing group class program. These aren’t just jam sessions. These are real bands made up of students who are learning what it means to play together: listening, leading, adjusting, and owning the moment.

Watching these bands perform reminded us why this part of our program matters so much—it’s not just about learning an instrument; it’s about learning to make music with others.

We’re excited to keep building this program and helping more students discover the power of collaboration on stage.

Our Mission: Making Better Musicians

At Roxy Music, our mission is simple: help students grow—not just in skill, but in confidence, creativity, and joy.

One moment that captured this perfectly was a student who, after battling nerves during rehearsals, decided to show up all three nights to get comfortable with the space before their big performance. That dedication paid off with a confident, moving performance on the final night. That’s what growth looks like—and we’re here for it every step of the way.

A Heartfelt Thank You

So many people made these concerts what they were.

Our house band—made up of our talented teachers—provided the foundation and flow behind every student performer:

  • Nate Miller
  • Tyler Grace
  • Hannah Grace
  • Luke Porter
  • Kim Thompson

With special guest appearances by Bob O’Banion, Baylor Kern-Lovick, and Arlo Bohnham.

Behind the scenes, Bob and Cheryl Levendowski ran the sound and lighting with absolute professionalism, ensuring every performance looked and sounded fantastic.

And we couldn’t have done it without our backstage crew, AJ Jackson and Blayne Buckner, who tuned and prepped instruments and brought them out for every student with care and calm. They were the quiet heroes of the show.

Lastly, we want to give special thanks to Joan Davis, a pillar of our teaching staff. For over 17 years, Joan has taught piano and voice at Roxy Music, shaping not only musicians but whole generations of students.

Looking Ahead — And Taking the Next Step

We’re so proud of every student and teacher who made this week possible. These concerts weren’t just about performance—they were about progress, passion, and people coming together through music.

And we’re not done yet—we’re already preparing for our next round of concerts in November 2025, expanding to four nights of music to showcase even more of our students and their growth.
